Here on the Southern Shore of the Avalon Peninsula, we know a thing or two about winter. As we watch the snow pile up and the wind whip across the harbour, our own inspiration—our 9-year-old Rottweiler, Keira, the namesake of this business—is always eager to get outside. But with our beautiful, brisk climate comes an important question every pet owner should ask: Can dogs get hypothermia?
The short and vital answer is yes, absolutely. While some breeds are more cold-tolerant, all dogs are susceptible to hypothermia when exposed to cold temperatures for too long—especially when combined with wet conditions or wind. Our sturdy Keira loves the cool air, but even she has her limits.
What is Hypothermia in Dogs?
Hypothermia occurs when a dog’s body temperature drops below the normal range of about 101–102.5°F (38.3–39.2°C). It happens when heat loss exceeds the body’s ability to produce it, and it can be a serious, life-threatening condition.
Signs to Watch For (Shivering is Just the Start!)
Early detection is key. Keep a close eye on your pup for these signs:
Mild Hypothermia: Strong shivering, lethargy, cold ears and paws, whining, or seeking warmth.
Moderate Hypothermia: Muscle stiffness, shallow breathing, stumbling or weakness, disorientation.
Severe Hypothermia: Collapse, very slow heart rate and breathing, dilated pupils, and loss of consciousness. This is an emergency requiring immediate veterinary care.
Which Dogs Are Most at Risk?
While any dog can get too cold, some need extra vigilance:
Small & Toy Breeds: They lose heat faster due to their size.
Short-Haired & Thin-Coated Breeds: Like Greyhounds, Dachshunds, and yes—even our loyal Rottweilers! Keira has a double coat, but it’s relatively short and can only do so much against a harsh Avalon Peninsula wind chill.
Senior Dogs & Puppies: They have less efficient temperature regulation. Our senior girl Keira gets extra cozy blankets and shorter walks when it’s bitter out.
Dogs with Health Conditions: Especially issues affecting metabolism or circulation.
Wet Dogs: Moisture is the real enemy. A damp coat loses its insulating ability quickly.
How to Prevent Hypothermia: Our Top Tips
Know Your Dog’s Limits: Keira will stand in the snow happily, but we watch for the “shiver start” and call it quits before she gets too cold.
Consider a Coat: For short-haired breeds, seniors, or chilly pups, a well-fitting waterproof jacket is a game-changer.
Paw Protection: Ice, snow, and salt can hurt paw pads. We use booties or protective paw wax, and always wipe Keira’s paws and belly clean after walks.
Keep Them Dry: Towel-dry thoroughly after any snowy or rainy adventure.
Cozy Recovery: After a cold walk, Keira loves to curl up on her warm bed. We make sure she has a draft-free, comfortable spot to rewarm naturally. (And I might cozy up beside her in my “Crazy Dog Lady” hoodie!)
What to Do If You Suspect Hypothermia
Get them inside immediately.
Wrap them in warm, dry blankets or towels. You can use heating pads on low wrapped in towels—never apply direct heat.
Offer warm (not hot) fluids if they are alert.
Contact your vet immediately for guidance. For moderate to severe signs, go to the vet right away.
Warm Hearts for Our Faithful Companions
At Keira’s Doghouse, our entire business was inspired by the bond with one amazing Rottweiler. We create custom pet lover apparel and home goods to celebrate that special connection. But more than anything, we want all pets—whether a mighty Rottie, a tiny Chihuahua, or a playful mutt—to be safe, loved, and warm.
So, enjoy the winter wonders with your pup, but always keep a watchful eye. Listen to them, protect them, and then celebrate them with a “Best Dog Dad in the Galaxy” mug or a custom pet portrait that captures their unique spirit.
Stay warm, stay safe, and keep those tails wagging.
