Keira’s Fresh Start – A 2026 Weight Loss Journey
At Keira’s Doghouse, our beloved Rottweiler mascot, Keira, is starting the new year with a health-focused resolution. At nine years old and slightly overweight, her well-being is more important than ever. We’re committing to a gentle, consistent plan that includes daily walks (with protective booties for her sensitive paws), measured meals, fewer treats, and activity tracking with a pedometer. This journey isn’t just about weight—it’s about improving her comfort, mobility, and joy in her senior years. We’re inviting our community to follow along and share their own tips using #KeirasFreshStart2026. #SeniorDogHealth #WeightLossJourney #KeirasDoghouse #DogMomLife

Here at Keira’s Doghouse, our business is built on love, laughter, and one very special Rottweiler—Keira herself. As our mascot, muse, and the heart behind everything we do, she’s more than just a pet; she’s family. And like any family member, her health and happiness are our top priority.
That’s why this year, we’re embarking on a journey we’re calling “Keira’s Fresh Start”—a dedicated, loving effort to help our girl reach a healthier weight and enjoy her golden years with more energy, less discomfort, and plenty of tail wags.
The Wake-Up Call 🐕⚖️
Keira turned nine this year, and with age comes a greater need for mindful care. Over the last several weeks, we noticed her appetite seemed insatiable and her weight began creeping up. A few months back, she weighed in at 100 pounds—at least 10 pounds over her ideal weight. Now, we suspect she’s closer to 105. While she’s always been a sturdy, strong Rottie, we know that extra weight isn’t just about looks—it’s about health, especially for her joints, her heart, and her overall well-being.
We’ll be getting an official weigh-in this month to know exactly where we stand, but one thing is clear: it’s time for a change.
Our Game Plan for January ❄️📋
We’re starting 2026 with intention, patience, and a practical plan designed for real life—and real Newfoundland winters!
1. Track Everything
We’ll be logging Keira’s food intake daily throughout January to establish a baseline. It’s easy to lose track of treats (especially when you run a pet business!), so we’re committing to measured meals and mindful snacking.
2. Walk Every Day, No Matter What
Yes, even when it’s blowing a gale or the snow is waist-deep. We’ve learned from past attempts—like last year’s “Mommy & Me 10,000 Step Challenge”—that consistency is key. This time, we’re setting a realistic goal: one walk a day, even if it’s just a short stroll around the block. Every step counts.
3. Paw Protection is Priority
Keira has chronic pododermatitis, which means her paws are often sore. Last year, we had to pause our walking challenge because of it. This time, we’re prepared: she’s got her own set of dog booties to keep her paws safe from salt, ice, and cold surfaces.
4. Tech Support
We’ve attached a pedometer to her collar to monitor her activity. It’s not just about steps—it’s about understanding her daily movement patterns and celebrating small victories.
5. Fewer Treats, More Love
This might be the hardest one for us! We’re cutting back on extras and finding new ways to show love—extra cuddles, longer play sessions indoors, and low-calorie veggie treats like carrots or green beans (even though she HATES vegetables unless it's in a homemade soup or stirfry).
Why This Matters More Than Ever 🌟
At nine years old, Keira is entering her senior years. Keeping her at a healthy weight can:
Ease pressure on her joints
Improve her mobility and energy
Support her immune system
Help her live a longer, more comfortable life
We’re not aiming for rapid weight loss—just steady, sustainable progress. And yes, this is a “Mommy & Me” journey in more ways than one. I’ll be walking right beside her, both for my own health and as her biggest cheerleader.
An Invitation to Our Community 🗣️❤️
We know many of you have been on similar journeys with your own pets. If you have tips—especially for walking dogs with sensitive paws, low-impact indoor activities, or healthy treat alternatives—we’d love to hear them! Your support means the world to us, and we’ll be sharing updates along the way.
This isn’t just about weight. It’s about quality of life, joyful moments, and making sure our sweet Keira feels her best every single day.
Here’s to a happier, healthier 2026—for Keira, for us, and for all the furry friends we love.
With gratitude and determination,
The Keira’s Doghouse Family
